DescriptionBesides its superiority in stand establishment, vigor, and forage production, Paloma is very drought tolerant. In one trial, Paloma was superior in resistance to root rot damage.
SourceCollected 3.6 kg in 1957 west of Pueblo, CO, by Bob Searway, SCS, at an elevation of 1,530 m and precipitation of 250-300 mm. Soils were medium textured. Growing in association with blue grama and western wheatgrass.
Breeding MethodBulk increase of multi-plant source material. Selected in comparison rows with 62 other strains in Los Lunas, NM; Las Cruces, NM; and Tucson, AZ. Stands, vigor, seed yields, and forage production were consistently higher for Paloma.
Intended UsePaloma was the first named cultivar of Indian ricegrass and is intended for use in soil stabilization, range revegetation, and mined land reclamation. Paloma is excellent forage grass and considered highly palatable to livestock and wildlife.
