DescriptionBison is 20 days earlier in anthesis than Bonilla and 30-48 days earlier than the southern cultivars Kaw, Champ, and Pawnee. Tends to be shorter in mature height. Chromosome number 2n=6x=60.
SourceOriginal plants were collected from a native stand near Price, Oliver County, ND
Breeding MethodCollected plants were grown for three years in comparison with 30 other accessions. Bison was selected over other accessions because of its uniform plant type with good leafiness, high plant vigor, seed yields, and winter hardiness. Its phenology, persistence, and forage yields were extensively tested by SCS in comparative field studies and on farm field plantings in ND, SD, and MN.
Intended UseErosion control, critical area, wildlife habitat, surface mine revegetation, range pasture, and natural area seedings.
Release InfoReleased cooperatively in 1989 by the ARS; Plant Materials Center, SCS, Bismarck, ND; and the ND and MN AESs.
