DescriptionThe flag leaf of Niagara is slightly but significantly wider than those of Kaw, Pawnee, and Rountree. Regrowth was more rapid in late summer and early fall. Leaves had less damage from leaf spot disease than plants of Kaw and Pawnee.
SourceSeed collected in 1957 by Harry Porter from a native stand of big bluestem along Buffalo Creek, Elma Township, Erie County, NY.
Breeding MethodThe original accession was selected by W. Curtis Sharp from an evaluation nursery in comparison with other big bluestem accessions. Plants were then isolated for seed increase
Intended UseUsed for warm season forage production, for revegetating droughty sites, such as sand and gravel mines, strip mines, or roadsides, and wildlife habitat improvement.
