DescriptionA typical sand bluestem that is characterized by the yellow villous character of the inflorescence. Plants are variable in height and spread from short to long rhizomes. Characteristic leaf color is glaucous blue-green in early growth and changes to yellow-green at maturity
SourceDomestic collections made in 1953 from the western and northern Sandhills of Nebraska by L.C. Newell and W.L. Tolstead and a single clone from a western Oklahoma source.
Breeding MethodCultivar was produced by the synthesis of two selected lines of sand bluestem tracing to the 1953 collections. One of the lines, Western Sandhills Yellow, traces to collections in the north central Nebraska sandhills. The lines were developed independently by successive generations of mass selection of rust, and the unique color of the inflorescence which characterizes the variety. The cultivar was synthesized by growing the two parents lines in alternate rows and bulk harvesting seed (Syn 1 breeder seed). Foundation seed (Syn 2) was initially grown from breeder seed but now is produced from a previous foundation seed field rogued for plant type. Certified seed is produced solely from Foundation seed
