Release: Texoka - buffalograss

This release is available in the marketplace

SymbolBUDA
Release NameTexoka
Release Typecultivar
DescriptionTexoka is a vigorous grass that produces more growth (160-190%) with more rapid spread than most collections of buffalograss to which it has been compared. It produces a high percentage of seed-bearing plants (female and monoecious) in its offspring (about 70% in the Syn. 1 and Syn. 2 generations).
SourceTen clones, four female and six male. The clones were individual collections, or of hybrid origin. Some came from the buffalograss collections at the Fort Hays Experiment Station, Hays, KS. Known origins range from Natoma, KS, to Spur, TX.
Breeding MethodClones were selected because they produce a high percentage of seed-bearing plants in their progeny. The initial seed production block was established vegetatively at the Fort Reno Experiment Station in 1954. All seed of Texoka was derived from that planting. Foundation seed released to the public was Syn. 2 seed. All commercial seed is Syn. 3 or later generations.
Intended UseRange seedings, erosion control, and turf.
Release Info1974, cooperatively by ARS; SCS; and Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas Agricultural Experiment Stations.
