DescriptionRed River is the first known variety of Digitaria ciliaris and therefore it has no relative descriptions to other cultivars. It contains the general morphological characteristics of D. ciliaris, but is an agronomic selection of known and better forage characteristics. The major forage area is anticipated to be from Kansas south and east to the coasts and as far north as Maryland. Production has been good in the 710-750 mm rainfall belts and above. It performs very well under irrigation. Palatability is very high. Quality is excellent. It fits well in winter crop double cropping regions, i.e., wheat-crabgrass, etc.
SourceDeveloped from seed collected from a single plant near Burneyville, OK.
Breeding MethodRed River was a natural selection and no type of artificial breeding was used in the evolution and development of the cultivar. The plant appears to be primarily self-pollinated with capability of cross-pollination.
Intended UseGrazing and hay during the warm season, stored field forage for fall and early winter, and for soil conservation. It is also useful in various grass and grass/legume mixtures or winter-summer double cropping. It could be used as temporary cover for cert
