DescriptionVigorous, early-growing wheatgrass; semi-erect, long-lived, slender. Leaves and stems moderately coarse and glaucous gray-green. Plants high in vegetative production. Resistant to leaf rust, stem rust, and stripe rust; superior to common slender wheatgrass in resistance to head smut. Seed production moderately heavy; seeds relatively large when compared with those of ordinary strains. Adapted to short-lived dryland seedings in areas with minimum of 360 mm of rainfall; best adapted to conditions of eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and northeastern Oregon.
SourceCollected near Beebe, MT, in 1933 by the USDA-FS.
Breeding MethodIn 1936 it was planted as selection P-2535 in comparison with 23 other strains. Later it was compared with 104 selections and tested over a period of 10 years at several locations in the Pacific Northwest.
Intended UseAdapted for use in sweet clover-grass conservation mixtures for pasture, hay, and green manure. Alkali tolerant.
