DescriptionA strongly rhizomatous leafy ecotype intermediate in growth between northern and southern types; shows little evidence of rust in western KS and relatively free of rust at Manhattan. In plot evaluations at Manhattan, superior in forage production and disease resistance to accessions representing areas where western wheatgrass seed is frequently harvested for commercial use. At Hays Experiment Station, Barton western wheatgrass ranked first in seed culm development and forage yield in comparison with 16 other accessions.
SourceSeed collected in 1947 from natural grassland on clay bottomland along Walnut Creek near Heizer in Barton County, KS.
Breeding MethodField seed collection increased and tested as PM-K-402.
Intended UseRange reseeding, revegetation of disturbed areas, stabilization of earth structures, and revegetation of saline areas.
