DescriptionFlintlock spreads aggressively by rhizomes, has relatively coarse culms, and relatively soft leaves compared with other strains of western wheatgrass. Fully developed spikes are robust with double spikelets frequent on lower nodes.
SourcePlant selections from 30 accessions collected in 1957 from native grasslands of central and southwestern Nebraska and northwestern Kansas.
Breeding MethodA base population of 30 accessions was subjected to two cycles of recurrent selection for forage and seed yields and rhizomatous spread. One hundred parent clones were then selected and intermated to produce a synthetic with a broad genetic base.
Intended UseFlintlock has been grown in monoculture or in mixtures with other cool-season grasses in the central Great Plains and portions of adjacent regions for conservation purposes, roadside and park plantings, dryland hay production, and early season pasture tha
