SourceSelections by G.A. Rogler in 1936 from a commercial seed field of unknown origin grown in the Missouri River bottoms near Mandan, ND.
Breeding MethodThirteen half-sibs from a 40-plant progeny row were selected for density of foliage cover, leafiness, and resistance to stem rust. These 13 selections were intermated in isolation, and the bulked seed was in turn grown in isolation for seven open-pollinated seed increase generations. Low intensity selection was practiced during this time by roguing plants with obvious defects. Natural selection favored upland types with drought tolerance. Three hundred ramets were selected at random from the seventh-generation seed increase field and used to establish an isolation plot for production of breeder seed.
Intended UseRodan is adapted for grazing and hay in the northern Great Plains region of the U.S. and the Canadian prairie region. Rodan has had extensive use in revegetation of disturbed lands. In its area of adaptation, Rodan has had higher forage production on coa
