DescriptionUpland-type switchgrass of medium height, with rather large stems. Ranked high in leafiness, total forage produced, and resistance to rust and other diseases. Good seedling vigor. Wide adaptation in range seedings, pasture plantings, waterways, and other permanent plantings in Kansas, Oklahoma, southern Nebraska, and northern Texas in areas of 500 mm or more of annual precipitation. Will grow on sandy ranges and favorable lowland sites in area of 380-760 mm of annual precipitation.
SourceSeed harvested in 1934 from single plant growing in native prairie near Blackwell, OK.
Breeding MethodSingle plant selected in comparison with many other collections at SCS Nursery, Manhattan. Tested as KG-208.
Intended UseRange reseeding, pasture plantings, waterways, and revegetation of disturbed areas.
