DescriptionDacotah is 27 days earlier in anthesis than Forestburg and 45-50 days earlier than Blackwell, Summer Cave-in-Rock, Pathfinder, and Nebraska-28. Tends to be shorter in mature height and have less rank growth than southern cultivars. Appears to have increased drought tolerance for this species. Chromosome number 2n=4x=36
SourceOriginal plants collected from a native stand near Breien, Morten County, ND.
Breeding MethodCollected plants were grown in comparison with other collections. After three generations in open pollinated nurseries, 10 plants were selected for uniform plant type with good leafiness, high plant vigor, seed yields, winter hardiness, and uniform green color. Phenology, persistence, and forage yield have been extensively evaluated by SCS in comparative field evaluation studies and on farm field plantings in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota.
Intended UseErosion control, critical area, wildlife habitat, surface mine revegetation, range, pasture, and natural area seedings.
