DescriptionSuperior winter-hardiness and persistence, seed production ability, and earlier maturity than other accessions. Forage production at northern latitudes exceeds that of Dacotah and is equal to/greater than Nebraska 28. Forestburg is similar in performance and adaptation to Sunburst.
SourceComposite of four accessions collected from native stands in Sanborn County near Forestburg, SD.
Breeding MethodSelection based on performance in comparison with many accessions in initial evaluation studies. The phenology, persistence, forage yield and quality, animal performance, and wildlife habitat potential have been extensively tested in comparative field evaluation studies and field plantings in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota.
Intended UseRange and pasture seedings, wildlife habitat, natural areas, surface mine revegetation, and critical area seedings.
Release InfoReleased cooperatively in 1987 by the Plant Materials Center, SCS, Bismarck, ND; ARS; and the North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Stations.
