DescriptionShelter has thicker stems and fewer leaves than other released varieties with the exception of Kanlow. It is 5-40 mm taller than Blackwell after the second growing season, but exhibits less seedling vigor during the establishment year. Shelter reaches full anthesis 7-10 days earlier than Blackwell.
SourceFrank Glover collected switchgrass seed from a stand located south of St. Mary's, WV, in 1956.
Breeding MethodThe original accession was selected for upright form and stiff stems and was advanced under isolation for two generations. Sixty plants were then selected for large number of stems, early maturity, large stem diameter, and leafiness and moved to an isolated cross-pollination block.
Intended UseSpring nesting cover for ground nesting birds, and escape cover for wildlife. Can be s a component of warm-season grass mixtures on droughty sites.
Release Info1986 - cooperatively by SCS, Cornell University, New York Department of Environmental Conservation Division of Fish & Wildlife, and the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Previously a germplasm release as NY-4006.
