DescriptionA perennial herb that grows from 20-50 cm with several stout, erect, or curving stems. The flowers range from 17 to 23 mm and are shades of violet and pink drought tolerant, leaves are gray-green and waxy. Naturally found from western Kansas to southern Utah, southward into New Mexico and northern Arizona. Inhabits sandy places on plains, hills, and dunes at 1520 to 2128 m. It does poorly and is short-lived when planted in heavy soils, is sensitive to root rot fungi, and can be destroyed by overwatering (8-10 in of annual precip is adequate).

Breeding MethodWild-collected material was grown under agronomic conditions for 5 years then seeds were collected from hardy plants to establish the San Juan Germplasm
Intended UseErosion control, wildlife food/cover, restoration of disturbed sites, increasing plant diversity of rangelands, and for low water use, beautification of urban and rural landscapes.
