DescriptionLate-season, perennial forb reaching height of 12 to 24 in. Adapted to dry, open spaces such as grasslands and waste and disturbed areas on a variety of soil types, from rocky to gravelly-sandy loams with a pH ranging from slightly acidic to moderately alkaline. It occurs at elevations of 3,200' to 8,400' in areas receiving 10 to 30 in. of annual precipitation. It is drought-tolerant and mildly saline-tolerant, and grows optimumally in full sun in a native plant community. In early stages very palatable to wildlife and livestock.
SourceCollected in 1989, from 5 locations, Carbon County and Stillwater County, MT; elevations range from 3600' to 5400'.
Breeding MethodComposite of 5 accessions. Compared with 20 other accessions in evaluation plantings over a period of more than 10 years. Selected on basis of consistent taller stature, uniformity in seed maturity dates, and superior seed production.
Intended UsePasture for livestock and forage for wildlife, native biodiversity addition, native revegetation and restoration, and for use as an ornamental.
