SymbolSCSC
Release NameCamper
Release Typecultivar
DescriptionA long-lived perennial forage cultivar with maximum vegetative growth produced in midsummer. Bunch-type, spreading by short rhizomes; leaves are long and narrow. Leaf color is predominantly gray to glaucus blue-green in early growth and under dry conditions, becoming darker with approaching maturity. Seed set results from pollination over an extended period with moderately late maturity for seed harvest; its area of adapation and use is thus extended throughout those parts of Nebraska where little bluestem is grown.
SourceDomestic collections in 1953 from natural prairies in Nebraska and Kansas.
Breeding MethodDeveloped by synthesis of two unrelated lines, designated for leaf color as "Late Gray" and "Early Blue." Three generations of spaced-plant selection for their dominant leaf color phenotypes. Evaluated in Nebraska Outstate Tests (1964-68). Seed of selected progeny from an intercrossing isolation of parent lines was increased as breeder seed. Result is an improvement upon single-source and wild harvests of little bluestem in broad genetic composition, adaptation, seed production, and stand establishment.
Intended UseIn mixtures of other warm-season prairie grasses for range, non-irrigated pasture, and roadside plantings.
Release Info1973, cooperatively by Nebraska AES and USDA-ARS.
