DescriptionEarlier maturity and superior winter-hardiness and persistence. At northern latitudes, forage production is similar to Holt and exceeds Oto and Rumsey. Matures 33 days earlier than Holt, 71 days earlier than Oto, and 82 days earlier than Osage and Rumsey. Chromosome number 2n=40.
SourceComposite of three seed collections from native stands near Ludden, Dickey County, ND, and Britton, Marshall County, and Hecla, Brown County, SD.
Breeding MethodInitial evaluation of the collections were made in comparison with 16 other accessions at the Bismarck Plant Materials Center. The three accessions were selected based on high seed yield and winter survival.
Intended UseRange and pasture seedings, wildlife habitat, natural areas, surface mine revegetation, and critical area seedings.
Release InfoCooperatively in 1988 by the SCS, Plant Materials Center, Bismarck, ND; ARS; and the North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Stations.
